GIAN Gujarat Grassroots Innovation Augmentation Network (GIAN), established in 1997, is India's first incubator dedicated to grassroots innovations. Formed through a collaboration between the Gujarat government, SRISTI, IIM Ahmedabad, and the Honey Bee Network, GIAN supports creativity, experimentation, and innovation within local communities. Its mission is to promote innovations that emerge from the grassroots, conserve biodiversity, and utilize traditional knowledge through both commercial and non-commercial means. The GIAN building is thoughtfully designed to support this vision. Set on low-lying land, it is elevated on stilts, creating usable shaded areas in summer and winter. The central courtyard serves as a dynamic space for exhibitions and performances, while the staircase functions as both circulation and an elevated dais for talks. The facility includes exhibition areas, research labs, workshops, and modest residential units for innovators and scientists, making it a holistic space for fostering and sustaining grassroots innovation in India.
