ClientsURMILA KANORIA
The design of the new addition to the Kanoria Centre was guided by the idea that it must grow organically from its existing environment, maintaining a continuous relationship with the surrounding space. The openness, adaptability, and collaborative spirit that characterize Doshi’s architecture for the Kanoria Centre were central to the design of the Urmila Kailash Black Box. The 1,656-square-foot experimental theatre and multifunctional space, though enclosed, was conceived to be flexible—an environment that could be opened up when needed and one that would allow natural light to flow in.
The idea of connections—visual, spatial, and physical—was at the heart of all the design decisions. Strategically placed windows were designed to modulate light when opened, while the sloping roof, acting as a “pardi,” a solid concrete wall, invites diffused light from below, enhancing the interior atmosphere. Throughout the design, no part of the building was considered secondary.
Design decisions were made with the goal of fostering connections throughout the building. Windows link the theatre space to the staircase and artist studios, while the main entrance creates a connection to the children’s classrooms. A green room overlooks a previously underutilized courtyard, now transformed into a vibrant hub for activity and gatherings. Each design choice enhances the potential for community interaction and engagement, reflecting the value of thoughtful, cohesive design in public spaces.
