Gallery White transforms an entire floor of a commercial building in Baroda into a versatile art space, incorporating a gallery, classrooms, artist studios, and ancillary areas. Non-structural divisions were removed to create a fluid, open environment that can easily adapt to various functions.
The gallery features three rooms of varying sizes, with the largest multifunctional space designed to host talks, lectures, or movie screenings. Large sliding doors between rooms allow curators to adjust the flow, enhancing the space’s flexibility. The minimal material palette—white walls, polished concrete floors, and a black ceiling—creates a sense of height, while the space is completely shielded from natural light, providing optimal conditions for art display.
Adjacent to the gallery, the visual art center includes four smaller classrooms and a larger printmaking and ceramics studio. In contrast to the gallery’s enclosed atmosphere, the center is characterized by transparency, with glass and polycarbonate walls. Metal racks serve as partitions, subtly revealing activities inside while allowing natural light to filter into communal areas.
A key design feature is the transparency that begins at the lift lobby, where large sliding perforated metal doors offer partial views into the spaces. An angled wall shared by the gallery and lobby gently directs visitors toward the art center, guiding them deeper into the gallery.
