In a serene, tree-lined lane in Ahmedabad, a modest passage connects an 85-year-old house to its newly constructed annex. Much like annexes in popular culture or in personal experiences, this new addition serves as a retreat, offering its inhabitants both refuge and privacy. The challenge lay in how to extend the existing 85-year-old structure without disrupting the surrounding landscape. The solution was to design a partly subterranean extension, allowing the landscape to gradually rise to the first-floor level, where it seamlessly integrates with the original house.
To introduce natural light into the subterranean space, a courtyard was carved out of the volume, effectively bringing daylight into the interior. Today, the extension is scarcely noticeable, as the landscape has enveloped the new structure, creating a harmonious connection with the ancestral home. This approach ensures that the addition remains discreet, blending smoothly with the existing environment.
