Architect Balkrishna Doshi’s life and work has moved like a steady stream of consciousness, drawing from context, climate, culture and craft. Through serendipitous associations or chance encounters, the architect’s quest has remained rooted in multiplicities of being, thinking and manifesting. While Doshi’s architecture has been explored and viewed critically through the lenses of humanism, empathy and experience – the exhibition uncovers his search for the intangible, explored through journeys across built projects and the contexts which made them possible. The emergence and reappearance of multiple points of view, expressed through multimedia, show how experimentation and exploration are a constant part of the architect’s process. Yet, a search for reimagination at every step remains. Mis-steps, learnings and reappraisals too become a part of the flux, akin to boulders shaping the course of a river.
With this background, a field of buildings represented through various sectional avatars - or archetypes of being and thinking about light, scale, movement and life. A slice from many manifestations — a selection of sections presents a microcosm from Doshi’s imaginations, which is alive with stories, legends and learnings. Concepts of plasticity, extension and malleability are recurring questions throughout his work, which the sections become traces of. Through fragments of buildings, models and sketches, the exhibition recounts the many-layered qualities of Prof. Doshi’s spaces. References from history, both personal and social, anchor the exhibition and reveal undercurrents which may have shaped India’s built environment realities. And specific elements of built projects allow an analysis of materiality, scale and meaning - while moving through, not around them. All together, the exhibition presents an imaginarium of ‘heterogeneous homogeneity’, inviting the viewer to connect with ‘the architecture within us’ as Doshi would say.
